Thomas Kunkel Dean of the Phillip Merril College of Journalism, University of Maryland Title: "All the Ethics that Fit..." Tuesday, April 8, 2008 7pm HUB Auditorium

Thomas Kunkel, dean of the Philip Merrill College of Journalism at the University of Maryland, will present, “All the Ethics That Fit ...,” a free public lecture coordinated by the College of Communications.

In his role at Maryland, Kunkel serves as president of American Journalism Review, a national magazine published by the college. He also has served as as director of the Knight Center for Specialized Journalism and as director of the Project on the State of the American Newspaper.

A writer and editor, Kunkel spent most of his career in newspaper management. At 29, he was the youngest executive editor in company history for Knight-Ridder’s Columbus (Ga.) Ledger-Enquirer. He also worked for the San Jose Mercury News, the Miami Herald, The New York Times and the Cincinnati Post. He also was editor and publisher of Arizona Trend magazine. He has written or edited five books, including “Genius in Disguise: Harold Ross of The New Yorker” (1995, Random House).

Kunkel earned his bachelor's degree in political science in 1977 and a master's degree in the humanities in 1979, both from the University of Evansville.
